Central Vietnam braces for prolonged heavy rain as typhoon weakens

Typhoon Fengshen has weakened, but it is expected to dump torrential rain on central Vietnam until the end of October.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that a cold front has spread across most of the north-western region and parts of central Vietnam. The cold air mass will continue advancing southward today, October 22.

From this afternoon, strong winds of up to force 9 are likely along the coastal provinces from Quang Tri to Danang as the typhoon’s circulation interacts with the strengthening cold front.

Northern localities and Thanh Hoa Province will see cooler nights and early mornings, especially in mountainous areas, where temperatures may drop to 16-22 degrees Celsius. Hanoi will remain dry and sunny during the day, with night-time temperatures hovering around 19-22 degrees Celcius.

Forecasters expect heavy to very heavy rain across the central provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, with rainfall totals between 100 and 200 mm, and up to 300 mm in some places. The heaviest rainfall, from southern Quang Tri to Danang, could reach as much as 700 mm.

Meteorologists warn that the downpour may continue across the region until late October, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

As of 9 pm on October 21, the centre of Typhoon Fengshen was located about 380 km east-northeast of Danang. The storm is forecast to move over the waters off Hue and Quang Ngai this evening, bringing strong winds before weakening into a tropical depression while tracking west-southwest at 10-15 km/h.
