Typhoon Fengshen weakens before hitting Central Vietnam

Typhoon Fengshen, the twelfth storm in the East Sea this year, weakened into a tropical depression before making landfall in Vietnam’s central region this morning, October 23.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the tropical depression was located over the waters off Quang Tri to Quang Ngai provinces and was expected to move inland between Thua Thien Hue and Quang Ngai within hours.

Under the combined influence of the storm’s circulation and a cold spell, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast from Quang Tri to Danang through October 24, with totals of 100-200 mm, locally exceeding 300 mm. Particularly from southern Quang Tri to Danang, rainfall could reach 200-400 mm, and in some areas above 700 mm.

Coastal areas from southern Quang Tri to Danang are likely to face strong winds and high waves of 0.3-0.6 metres, posing risks of coastal erosion, road flooding, and inundation in low-lying zones.

Meanwhile, mountainous areas face a high risk of flash floods and landslides, while urban areas, including Hai Van Ward in Danang and Chan May-Lang Co in Thua Thien-Hue, are vulnerable to flooding.

Authorities warned that flood levels on rivers from southern Quang Tri to Danang could reach alert levels 2-3, or higher in some areas, corresponding to a disaster risk level of 2-3.

Rainfall in central Vietnam may persist until late October. Meanwhile, a new tropical depression forming over the East Sea is expected to move southward and dissipate without affecting the Vietnamese mainland.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on October 22 issued an urgent directive calling on ministries and local authorities to step up preparedness for flooding, flash floods, and landslides across the central region.
