A massive landslide early on October 28 buried a major road in Ngoc Linh Commune, Quang Tri Province, isolating over 1,700 residents after thousands of cubic meters of soil and rocks tumbled down the mountainside.

According to Dinh Xuan Hoa, chairman of the Ngoc Linh Commune People’s Committee, residents heard a loud explosion from the mountain in Lang Moi Village before a river of red mud nearly 3 kilometres long swept down, blocking access to the area.

Local authorities have cordoned off the affected roads and stationed guards at both ends to prevent people from passing through. Schools in the commune have been closed on October 27 and 28 for safety reasons.

Heavy rainfall also caused landslides along several other routes in the commune, further hampering transportation. On Provincial Road 673, about 10 additional landslide points have been reported, with soil, rocks, and fallen trees cutting off traffic. Locals can only walk or carry their motorbikes across the damaged sections.

Ngoc Linh Commune authorities have mobilized militia forces and local residents to clear debris and restore traffic as soon as possible.
