Typhoon Fengshen forecast to bring heavy rain to central Vietnam

Widespread and prolonged heavy rain is expected across the central region of Vietnam in the coming days due to the influence of Typhoon Fengshen.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7 am on October 20, Typhoon Fengshen in the East Sea was located about 490 km east-northeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands, moving northwest at around 25 km per hour.

It is forecast to approach the waters off Hue to Quang Ngai by early October 23, with sustained winds of level 8, gusting 10, before weakening into a low-pressure area by October 25.

Localities from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai are likely to experience several days of widespread heavy rain from October 22 to 27, with some areas facing torrential downpours and heightened risks of flash floods and landslides. Authorities have been warned to prepare for river levels from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai reaching or surpassing the highest alert.

Meteorological experts said the storm remains unpredictable due to its interaction with a cold air mass.

Localities have been warned to ensure the safe operation of hydropower and irrigation reservoirs and to prepare for possible floods on rivers from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai, where levels could reach or exceed the highest alert. The flood and inundation risk has been rated level 3.

Meanwhile, a cold front has started affecting parts of the northeast. It is expected to strengthen and expand to northern and north-central provinces by October 22, bringing cooler weather to the north and showers to parts of the central region.

From the night of October 20, the northern delta and Thanh Hoa will turn chilly at night and early morning, with temperatures falling to 19-21 degrees Celsius. In the northern midlands and mountains, temperatures will range from 17-19 degrees Celsius, dropping below 16 degrees Celsius in higher areas. Hanoi will see little rain, with nighttime and early-morning lows of 19-21 degrees Celsius.
