Hanoi targets to have all public buses running on electric or green energy by 2030, according to a proposal sent by the city's People's Committee to the municipal People's Council.

Hanoi now has 277 public buses running on green energy.

All new buses from 2025 will use green energy, and all new taxis from 2030 will also run on electricity or green energy.

Following the proposal, the city's Transport Department has mapped out three stages for replacing diesel—or petrol-fuelled buses with electric or green energy vehicles.

In the first stage, 50 percent of buses will run on electric power, and the rest will be fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) from 2026 to 2030. By 2033, the total investment capital for this period is estimated at more than VND43.90 trillion (USD1.71 billion).

In the second stage, which will be taken at any time based on real conditions, at least 70 percent of buses will run on electricity, and 30 percent will be fuelled by CNG. This would cost over VND47 trillion (VND1.84 billion).

In the last stage, which is expected to be implemented in 2040, 100 percent of replaced buses will run on electricity, with a total investment capital estimated at over VND52.35 trillion (VND2.05 billion).

The capital city currently uses VND2.30 trillion from the state budget to subsidise the operation of 132 public bus routes. Only 277 out of 2,034 public buses are now running on green energy.

Hanoi will need to spend VND 8.30 trillion more on replacing diesel - or petrol-fuelled buses with electric or green energy vehicles between 2024 and 2033.
