Truong Thi Hoa and her paralysed son have lived on merely a VND120,000 ($6.6) allowance per month from the local authorities for years.
They are living in extreme poverty, sharing a very small home with a bamboo bed, a few utensils and a bucket; the most valuable item the family owns.
Occasionally, neighbours will contribute some salt and food to help out when they can.
In Hoa's old age, she wishes only for some chickens in order to help her better feed her paralysed son.
They do not even have a toilet. The elderly mother is too weak to help her son, so he is forced to relieve himself where he rests with a basin under the bed.
They do not have anything to live on except a small allowance. In addition, they do not have clean water to use. They often use rain water or water from the rusted well for drinking and cooking.
Despite how difficult her life is, she tries her best to look after her unfortunate son and does not feel lonely because he is with her.
Two years ago she was given some money from a charity organization and spent the entire sum buying a group of chickens in hopes that they would produce some eggs so that she could sell them and her son could have better meals but unluckily, they all died due to diseases. Her wish and her need had disappeared.
