97-year-old Ro Lan Ti lives alone in a rundown shack in Ia Grai District, Gia Lai Province
She received a small house through local support over 40 years ago, but it has since deteriorated. Fearing it could collapse, Ti recently moved into a nearby makeshift kitchen shelter, now used as her main living space.
Ro Lan Ti has moved out from her old house which has badly deteriorated and is no longer safe.
The shack measures just 8 square metres and is in poor condition. She uses tarpaulin to keep out the rain and sleeps on a makeshift bed made from wooden planks.
She now lives in an eight-square-metre shack which is also in poor condition.
According to Ti, she and her late husband had two children. One passed away from illness, and the other, a son, is married and lives far away. He is also in poor health and unable to support her.
Despite her advanced age, Ti remains physically active. She relies mostly on a government allowance for the elderly and earns a little extra income by collecting firewood and wild vegetables to sell or trade with neighbours for food and basic necessities.
Nguyen Duc Tan, Chairman of Ia Krai Commune People’s Committee, said that while Ti receives support under state policies and local care, her living conditions remain extremely difficult due to her age.
Tan added that the commune hopes for more support from donors to help rebuild Ti’s home and purchase essential items and medicine for her, especially in case of illness.
