A grade-12 student in Nghe An Province who died after saving five children from drowning has been posthumously honoured by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Posthumous honour for Nguyen Van Nam

Nguyen Van Nam, from Trung Son Commune in Do Luong District, was studying at Do Luong 1 High School.

On the afternoon of May 1, Nam heard a call for help while walking along the banks of the Lam River. He responded to the cries for help and swam into the river and saved all five children.

Due to too swift current he became exhausted and drowned.

People found his body later that day.

On May 5, a delegation from the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) offered a tribute to Nam and comfort his family.

MoET’s Minister Pham Vu Luan posthumously granted Nam a certificate of merit and recognised him as a “Young Hero”, along with a financial support of VND20 million (USD954.9).

On May 3, State President Truong Tan Sang sent a letter of condolence to Nam’s family.

“Even though Nguyen Van Nam was born in an underprivileged family, he tried his best and studied well. He had just gained a scholarship for poor students,” Nguyen Thi Kieu Huong, principle of Do Luong 1 High School said.
