TV rights failure leaves Vietnam football fans struggling

The firm which holds the copyright to broadcast the Asian Games (ASIAD) 2018 has required Thailand to apply geographical restrictions to prevent Vietnamese fans from watching the games through Youtube.

VTV claims it could not afford to buy the broadcasting rights from KJSM World Corp, which is based in South Korea. Local fans have had to find the ways to watch the games on free channels through Facebook and Youtube, including those from Thailand.

More Vietnamese people have been rushing to watch Thailand’s Youtube channels to watch ASIAD 18. KJSM World have requested its Thailand partners to impose geographical restrictions to prevent the Vietnamese from watching the games.

Following the news that VTV failed to secure the copyright for broadcast ASIAD 18, Vietnamese fans have watched football matches on the website xoilac.tv through Facebook and Youtube.

Meanwhile, the management board of xoilac.tv said that they would try to provide all the matches of the tournament.

The Asian Games will be held from August 18 to September 2, however football matches began on August 14 and will last until September 1.

According to Linda Wahyudi, the broadcasting director of the Indonesian Asian Games Organising Committee, 75 countries have bought broadcasting rights for the Asian Games.
