A film named Inferno or Giao Lo Dinh Menh was omitted from the Golden Kite film competition because of “piracy suspicions”.

“Inferno” too much like “Shattered”?
Tran Bao Son, the film’s main actor, will not attend

The film, by the overseas Vietnamese director, Victor Vu, has attracted a lot of public interest. But it has also stirred a lot of controversy because some say that it is too close to another film from the U.S., named Shattered.

Tran Luan Kim, head of the board of examiners, said that the board decided to take the film off the roster for the contest after finding many similarities between the two movies.

He did not specifically say that the film had been plagiarised, only saying that the decision was made because of public reaction, which might affect the outcome of the contest. He declined to give any more details about the matter, because the board is busy reviewing the films that have been accepted.

When Inferno was named in the list to compete in the contest, many people expected that Tran Bao Son, the main actor, would be selected for the “Best Lead Actor” award. Unfortunately for him, the controversy has cut his chances to next to nil.

The Golden Kite Award is an annual event put on by the Vietnam Cinema Association. The award ceremony for the films of 2010 will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, on March 13, and will be broadcast live on VTV2 and VTV4.
