Fansipan hosts first brocade festival

The first Brocade Festival at Sun World Fansipan Legend in Sapa, Lao Cai Province, will run from August 22 to September 6, showcasing traditional crafts, highland culture and the golden rice season.

Held at Ban May under the theme ‘Golden Season in Brocade Colours’, the festival will showcase traditional textile-making and patterns reflecting local ethnic cultures and traditions.

The festival space will also recreate Sapa’s autumn landscape, linking ripening terraced fields with brocade products made by local artisans.

One of the highlights will be the ‘Season of Sun and Rain’ minishow, inspired by Mong life. Through dance, traditional music and familiar farming items, including baskets, ladders, maize and rice, performers will portray the life of a highland family alongside a 25-metre brocade cloth.

The festival will also feature new-rice ceremonies of the Tay and Thai communities, reflecting gratitude for the harvest and hopes for prosperity and good crops.

After the ceremonies, visitors can join folk dances, bamboo dancing and other community activities rather than simply watch from the sidelines.

A series of arts and fashion performances inspired by brocade materials and patterns will present traditional culture in a more contemporary form.

Visitors can also try folk games such as stilt racing, rice-cooking contests, pounding banh giay and harvest races, offering a closer look at highland daily life and communal traditions.

During the National Day holiday, Muong Hoa Valley’s terraced fields will begin turning golden, while orange gladiolus-like flowers bloom around Fansipan, adding to the seasonal landscape.

Flag-raising ceremonies will be held on Fansipan summit, 3,143 metres above sea level, on August 31, September 1 and National Day ( September 2).

Visitors can also explore the cultural and spiritual complex at Sun World Fansipan Legend, sample highland cuisine and enjoy Sapa’s early-autumn scenery.

The festival aims to give visitors a deeper understanding of north-western Vietnam’s traditional crafts, rituals, food and community life while adding a new cultural experience to Sapa’s autumn tourism season.
