Vong Phu rock pillar faces collapse due to the impacts of natural disasters.
In their proposal to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee said that Vong Phu rock pillar is at high risk of collapse after being struck by lightning two times.
The limestone mountain has also shown cracks due to time and excessive quarrying activities in the surrounding mountains.
"The recent lightning strikes have caused Vong Phu to crack and tilt," the committee said. "If further struck by lightning and landslides, it could collapse anytime."
The Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has approved spending VND17 billion on a preservation project at the popular tourism site.
According to the committee, the project should be completed before May this year.
The Vong Phu rock pillar in Thanh Hoa City's An Hung Ward is a 20-metre-high rock located at An Hoach Mountain. It was recognised as a national heritage site in 1992. According to legend, the rock pillar resembles a standing woman waiting for her soldier husband.
