Project to revamp area in front of HCM City's iconic market approved

The HCM City Department of Construction has given the green light to a project to renovate the area in front of Ben Thanh Market in District 1.

The VND145-billion (USD5.71 million) project will upgrade a 59,000-square metre area in front of Ben Thanh Market.

Of this, approximately 45,800 square metres will be developed into a landscaped space, including a square. The area will be divided into four zones: the surroundings of Ben Thanh Market, the small island in front of the Hoa Xa headquarters, the area facing the Ben Thanh Quadrangle, and the intersection at 23/9 Park.

The project will also improve drainage systems, landscaping, roads, water supply, lighting, and other infrastructure. It is scheduled for implementation between 2025 and 2026.

HCM City will plant small-leaved trees, including tamarind and barringtonia, to provide shade for the square while maintaining a clear view of Ben Thanh Market.

Large grass-covered areas will be created to foster communal spaces, minimise heat absorption, and improve natural drainage, reducing the risk of flooding during the rainy season.

Spanning 13,000 square meters, Ben Thanh Market has long been a popular tourist attraction in HCM City. The market was last renovated in 1985 and sits near the entrance of the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line.
