New South Wales Police said a 24-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday and "charged over a scheme in which 240 victims were allegedly defrauded while buying overseas travel airline tickets via a social media website."
The name of the woman was withheld.
"Detectives from Sydney City Local Area Command commenced Strike Force Couranga after several reports were made to police across Sydney regarding the alleged fraudulent selling of airline tickets via a social media website catering to overseas students," police said.
"The value of the tickets involved is estimated to be in excess of $A360,000," they said.
The woman was charged with ten counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception and granted conditional bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on February 3.
Investigations are continuing.
A representative of Vietnam Airlines in Sydney said the firm would try to help affected students wanting to get home for Tet.
