On the morning of January 12, local residents in the coastal area of Hoa Trach Commune, Quang Tri, discovered the decomposing carcass drifting onto the beach.
According to the Hoa Trach Commune People’s Committee, the whale was already in an advanced state of decomposition when it was found.
After receiving the report, local authorities quickly coordinated efforts to bury the carcass. The burial was carried out in accordance with the traditional customs of local fishermen while also ensuring environmental sanitation regulations were met.
In Vietnamese fishing culture, whales, commonly known as ca ong, are regarded as sacred guardians of the sea. When a whale carcass washes ashore, fishermen typically hold respectful burial rituals to show their deep reverence for the animal.
