Vietnam recorded 425 new Covid-19 infections in the past six hours, raising the total number of patients in the country to 24,810, the Ministry of Health has reported.
According to the ministry's report, 423 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 350 in Ho Chi Minh City, 37 in Long An, 15 in Dong Nai, six in Phu Yen, five in An Giang, four in Khanh Hoa, three in Bac Ninh, and one each in Vinh Phuc, Gia Lai, and Bac Lieu.
Ho Chi Minh City continued to report the highest number of new infections in the country. On Thursday the city also recorded 915 new patients, the majority of which are individuals who came into contact with confirmed Covid-19 patients or who were detected in either isolation and locked down areas.
As of Friday morning, 21,340 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 9,416 in the virus hotspot of Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 57 cities and provinces nationwide.
Two imported patients are both Vietnamese women who recently returned from France and Cambodia. They were sent to quarantine areas in Thai Binh and An Giang provinces upon arrival and are now being treated at local hospitals.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 24,810 including 22,910 locally-transmitted cases.
As of 6 pm on July 8, a total of 8,950 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital.
So far there have been 105 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.
At present, over 259,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.
By the end of July 8, Vietnam has conducted nearly four million doses of Covid-19 vaccine. More than 249,000 people have received two doses of the vaccine.
