According to a report from the Ia Pal Commune People's Committee, the incident occurred at a local household on Thursday.
"The 11-year-old sister and her two siblings aged four and five took some toads to eat that had been caught by their father a day before when their parents were away on Thursday morning," the committee reported.
Their parents arrived home at 11.30 am to find the children lying unconscious on the floor and rushed them to the hospital. However, the 11-year-old sister and four-year-old brother died from poisoning while the five-year-old is still being treated in critical condition.
A woman and her two children in Phu Tho Province and three children in Gia Lai Province also faced poisoning after eating toad meat late last year. Luckily, they survived thanks to their rapid treatment.
Toad meat is believed to have rich nutrition and is a favourite food for many people in Vietnam. However, local doctors have warned about various poisonous substances, especially bufotoxin, in their skin, liver, and eggs.
