Truck driver praised after rescuing toddler on highway

A container truck driver has been widely praised after rescuing a one-year-old girl who wandered onto a busy highway.

Ly Van To, 31, was driving along National Highway 1 through Phu Loc Commune in Hue City on April 4 when he spotted a toddler walking unsteadily in the opposite lane.

He immediately switched on hazard lights, repeatedly sounded his horn to alert other drivers and slowed traffic before stopping his vehicle. He then ran across the central divider, picked up the child and returned her safely to her family by the roadside.

With 13 years of experience as a long-haul driver, To's timely handling of the situation has earned him widespread admiration.

To said his 13 years of experience as a truck driver had trained him to stay focused and look ahead. “I always keep my attention on the road and scan far ahead. The visibility was clear, so I spotted the child early and reacted in time,” he said.

He added that traffic police did not penalise him for stopping in the roadway. Instead, officers called to commend and encourage him for his actions.
