In a letter to Dantri/Dtinews asking for help, Le Thi Hen, 41, of Thanh Hoa's Quang Xuong District, said she was willing to give her son a kidney, but she couldn't find enough money for the operation.
"My 19-year-old son Le Ba Chinh is struggling with the last stage of kidney failure, and doctors said that he can only keep his life with a kidney transplant," the mother said. "I've registered to give my son one of my kidneys, and tests have shown that my kidney is suitable for him. But he hasn't been able to receive it because the cost of the operation is over VND500 million (USD19,685), which is too high for us, and we can't afford it."
The woman shared that Chinh is their eldest son, and she has two other small children. Chinh dropped out of school at 16 to do odd jobs to help earn money to support the family.
"He has started feeling tired since April, and we were very shocked when doctors said that he was in the last stage of kidney failure," she said. "And he has had to take dialysis three times a week since. I've had to stop my work to take care of him."
The mother said that both she and her husband registered to give their kidneys to their son, and testing showed that her kidney could be used for the transplant.
"I was delighted to hear that my kidney can help save my son," she said. "But we're distraught when being informed about the high cost."
"We've already owed nearly VND200 million," she said. However, we've managed to borrow VND300 million, which is half of the transplant fee. I've considered selling our tiny house, but Chinh disagreed, saying we need it for our six family members, including his elderly grandmother.
The Party Secretary of Viet Trung Village, Nguyen Van Thuc, said that Hen's family had incurred debts since their son developed kidney failure.
"We've also called for donations from people in our areas to help them, but the amount is still modest," the official said. "We hope that the young man will receive more support from others to help save his life.
