Severe cold persists across northern Vietnam

A strong cold spell has continued to grip northern Vietnam, with temperatures in some mountainous areas dropping below 5 degrees Celsius, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

The northern region is forecast to see bitterly cold conditions on January 6, with parts of the highlands facing hazardous cold and risks of frost and ice. Temperatures are expected to range from 9 to 12 degrees Celsius, falling to 6 to 9 degrees in mountainous areas and below 5 degrees at higher elevations.

Hanoi is forecast to remain dry but very cold, with overnight lows of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

The cold air mass will continue to affect parts of the north-central region before spreading further south to central Vietnam. Northeasterly winds are expected at levels 2 to 3 inland and 3 to 4 along coastal areas.

From Ha Tinh to Danang, and in eastern areas from Quang Ngai to Gia Lai, rain and thunderstorms are forecast on January 6, with localised heavy downpours. Severe weather such as whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts may occur, forecasters warned.

Authorities have urged local governments and residents in affected areas to closely monitor weather updates and take preventive measures. People have been advised to protect their health and avoid using charcoal stoves in enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Farmers have been told to reinforce livestock shelters, keep animals warm, stockpile feed, prevent disease outbreaks and take steps to safeguard rice, vegetables and other crops.
