Bich suffers from serious burns

Her husband Le Minh Hung, 28, said that on September 26, the cylinder suddenly exploded while Bich was cooking instant noodles for her children. The fire engulfed Bich, turning her into a human torch.

Despite Hung’s efforts, Bich still faced severe burns, particularly on two arms. The fire also caused injuries to Hung's right arm.

After being given with the first aid at a local hospital, Bich was moved to Can Tho General Hospital and then to Cho Ray Hospital.

Doctor Le Thanh Khuym at Cho Ray Hospital said that 27% of the woman’s body had experienced severe burns. The most dangerous problem to her now were respiratory burns, so she needed help.

Bich and her child before the accident

The couple had to leave school very early due to family difficulties. After getting married, they lived in a temporary small house on land owned by Hung’s grandmother. They worked as day labourers on small incomes.

They have been listed in the commune’s poor family group for many years and was provided with a charitable house valued at VND20 million (USD900).

On the day when Bich was hospitalised, they had only VND130,000 (USD5.9), so the husband had to borrow money from different sources.

Despite having health insurance for poor patients, Bich has to pay for many kinds of medicines costing tens of millions of VND in total to date, which are not covered by the insurance.

The two children, one aged five and the other 18 months old, are taken care of by their grandmother who is also very poor.

According to doctors, Bich needs long-term treatment which will cost at least VND2 million (USD90) per day.
