On the morning of August 29, expressway traffic police teams No. 3 and No. 4 recorded six violations, including four cases in which drivers failed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, according to the Traffic Police Department.
Team No. 3 handled three violations on the Phap Van-Cao Bo-Mai Son-National Highway 45-Nghi Son expressway corridor, including one for failing to maintain a safe distance and two for driving in the emergency lane.
Team No. 4 dealt with three cases of drivers failing to maintain a safe distance on expressways under its jurisdiction.
The two teams have handled 19 safe-distance violations since August 26.
The Traffic Police Department said vehicle numbers had risen on expressways in the early days of the September 2 National Day holiday, although most motorists were maintaining safe distances, staying in designated lanes and observing speed limits.
It said speeding, lane encroachment and frequent lane changes had declined, helping reduce the risk of collisions and maintain traffic flow.
Police said they would continue to step up enforcement and public awareness efforts targeting drivers who fail to maintain safe distances on expressways.
From March 1, 2027, traffic police will introduce 12 practical on-road driving test exercises designed to assess drivers' ability to apply traffic laws and driving skills in real-world conditions.
The tests will focus on compliance with traffic rules, observation and hazard response, maintaining safe distances, changing lanes, overtaking and other essential driving skills.
Authorities have urged motorists using expressways to stay in the correct lane, observe speed limits, maintain a safe following distance, avoid unnecessary lane changes and follow police instructions.
