Collaborative programme for implementing Drinking With Responsibility and Traffic Safety 2019 events held to prevent drunk driving

The National Traffic Safety Committee, Asia-Pacific International Wine & Spirits Alliance (APIWSA), and Vietnam's Association For Responsible Drinking (VARD) held a ceremony to announce the collaborative programme for implementing Drinking With Responsibility and Traffic Safety 2019 events.

The goal is to reduce alcohol abuse by drivers in Vietnam. Local authorities, social organisations as well as beverage firms will participate in the programme. Khuat Viet Hung, vice chairman of the National Traffic Committee, said, "We highly regard commitments made by APIWSA and its member companies in Vietnam."

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, 87% of Vietnamese men use alcoholic beverage and 60% of the road accidents were caused by motorbike drivers. In a survey of drivers stopped for exceeding their blood sugar levels while driving and responsible for causing traffic accidents, 40% said after drinking they were still sober enough to drive and 30% were completely drunk and not conscious of their surroundings

Jonathan Chew, Public Affairs Manager at Pernod Ricard Winemakers Pty Ltd, said they had been working with international organisations and local authorities in Vietnam on preventing alcohol abuse. He also said this is the third year APIWSA and VARD have collaborated on this programme. In 2020, they will announce the result of the programme.

They will help local authorities to build policies and solutions to raise public awareness about drunk driving, implement the regulations more effectively and better manage alcohol-related violations among commercial transport drivers.
