Residents find mortar rounds, grenades scattered beneath bridge

As river levels fell, mortar rounds and sacks of grenades were exposed beneath Cho Cau Bridge linking Yen Trung and Nghi Loc communes in Nghe An Province, alarming residents who alerted authorities.

A leader of the Nghi Loc Commune People's Committee in Nghe An Province told Dantri/Dtinews on June 30 that authorities had recovered all mortar shells and grenades discovered by residents beneath Cho Cau Bridge. After inspection, the items were identified as materials used for drills, with no detonators attached and posing no danger.

According to the official, immediately after receiving reports from residents, the authorities of Nghi Loc Commune and Yen Trung Commune coordinated to inspect the scene, cordon off the area where the munitions were found and prevent people from approaching to ensure safety. The mortar shells and grenades were then collected and handled in line with regulations.

Earlier, at about 12pm on June 29, residents crossing Cho Cau Bridge, which links Yen Trung and Nghi Loc communes, were startled to find many objects resembling mortar shells scattered on the alluvial ground by the riverbank beneath the bridge. There was also a sack containing numerous grenades. Fearing a safety risk, residents immediately alerted local authorities.

"Normally, the river is high, so no one notices them. In recent days, the water has receded and people passing by were able to see the munitions beneath the bridge," a resident of Nghi Loc Commune said.

The falling river level exposed the munitions clearly on the alluvial ground, drawing the attention of many passers-by. Local authorities then moved quickly to deal with the situation and prevent curious residents from approaching the scene.
