“From June 16 to the early morning of June 25, our unit located and recovered the remains of 10 martyrs in Ban Chua Village, Cam Lo District,” said Giang.
The remains were found at a depth of approximately 1.2 metres, spaced 2 to 4 metres apart. Several personal items were also discovered alongside the remains, including rubber sandals, shirt buttons, belt buckles, and poncho fragments.
Among the artifacts, a personal wallet and a bottle of penicillin were found near the first and eighth sets of remains. These items have been sent for forensic analysis, but no identifying information has been recovered so far.
The site is believed to have been a safe zone with favourable terrain during the American War. Between 1966 and 1969, it may have served as a burial area for fallen soldiers. In 1998, 45 sets of remains were recovered from a nearby location.
The remains of the 10 newly found martyrs are currently being kept at the Ban Chua Community Learning Centre while awaiting a memorial and reburial ceremony.
