>> Scam artists target tourists in Hanoi
DTiNews has been receiving hundreds of complaints filled with disappointment and shame from Vietnamese people everywhere when they heard about tourists being scammed in Hanoi.
Most people agreed that the authorities, despite knowing these scam artists have been around for a long time, choose to do nothing about it. Others worried that every effort in promoting a friendly and hospitable Vietnam to friends all over the globe is being destroyed by some vulgar individuals. Would Vietnam still be chosen as an ideal destination after this?

After reading this article on DTiNews, I realise the traditions and culture of our nation are falling into oblivion. The picture of honest workers are being exploited for self-interested purposes. These behaviours have been happening publicly, but the authorities have yet to take any measures in solving these disgraceful social problems. They have been very ignorant, powerless and irresponsible in my opinion. The police need to carry out an investigation that is based on the evidence provided by the newspaper in order to handle the problem strictly according to the laws.

I live here and have to witness these unpleasant images everyday. The article was able to reflect the truth, but this group of women plays more tricks than those described in the article. Beside insistently inviting, putting pressure on, exchanging money fraudulently, pick-pocketing and stealing, they often even enclose, bully and take money from foreign tourists. What I feel even more ashamed about is after playing all different kinds of trick, they brag with each other as if it was some kind of accomplishment. Everytime I have to witness this scene, I feel deeply ashamed. I have tried to inform the authorities about this problem, but nothing has yet been done. I hope the press continues to follow this story and express their opinions more strongly in order to stop this from happening. Otherwise, when the story fades away, the situation will sadly continue.

My friends and I have not only witnessed but aslo been in similar situations. My friends shared with me that they could not help but having fearful feelings about our country. One friend said to me he felt as if he was living with primitive people in an uncivilised world. The same kind of attitude, the same kind of act presented everywhere in restaurants, on public transportation and even in schools. How embarrassing can it be to hear!

I can only say I am ashamed, shocked and disgusted when I read this story. This is just demonstrating how the virtue and academic standard of a large number of Vietnamese people are not only falling behind but also receding in comparison to our international friends. There is a huge lack of responsibility on the part of the local authorities. If we place ourselves into their shoes, I really cannot imagine... We would not only lose our money, but also remember for life and never want to return.

I am a Vietnamese student who is currently living and studying in Russia. After reading this article, I feel extremely disappointed. Every effort of Vietnamese people living overseas in promoting a beautiful picture of Vietnam to the world is now returning to zero, just because of these ignorant attitudes and uneducated behaviours. Looking at the problem objectively, those individuals are, of course accountable for their wrongdoings. However, the biggest fault belongs to the authorities for their lack of competence and capability in tackling the problem and not enough awareness being raised among the people. There needs to be a serious form of disciplinary action to deter those people. I hope the authorities will quickly handle the situation and correct the image of Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general. We have to do something before it is too late!
