Many streets including Pham Van Dong, Nguyen Chi Thanh, Xa Dan, Thai Ha and Tran Thai Tong were packed with vehicles on Thursday morning. The temperature in Hanoi was around 14 degrees with rain so many people used their own cars to go to work.
The streets were mostly dominated by cars with motorists weaving between or using the pavement on Wednesday late afternoon. Many people left work early to avoid congestion. An hour later, the streets were already jammed. Police struggled to regulate the traffic through the rain.
According to a survey conducted by Uber Vietnam and market research firm Audience Project with 2,038 people in Hanoi and HCM City aged from 18 to 65, about 49% drivers in Hanoi and 48% in HCM City said they were considering selling their cars because of congestion and lack of parking. 52% people in Hanoi and 47% in HCM City said they had no intention of buying a car in the near future.
Statistics from the Traffic Safety Committee show that Vietnam has 3.2 million cars and 49 million motorbikes and the number of private vehicles is increasing sharply in urban areas. Meanwhile, the development of infrastructure and public transportation are lagging behind.
