Hue History Museum moves to new site

The Hue City History Museum will relocate more than 33,000 artefacts, including aircraft wreckage, tanks and artillery, to a new seven-storey building in Vy Da Ward.

Nguyen Duc Loc, director of the Hue City History Museum, said the building at 24 To Huu Street was formerly the Hue City People’s Committee headquarters and later served as Thuan Hoa District’s headquarters after Hue became a centrally run city in January 2025.

Since July 1, 2025, when the two-tier local government system came into operation, the former district headquarters has been left vacant.

The museum has drawn up plans to move more than 33,000 artefacts, including two national treasures, from its current site at 268 Dien Bien Phu Street to the new headquarters.

Loc said the relocation of oversized artefacts would require support from specialist agencies.

The museum was based for nearly 50 years at the Nguyen Dynasty’s Quoc Tu Giam complex before moving in 2024 to the Dien Bien Phu site, which later proved too cramped for exhibitions.

The new site, covering more than 20,000 square metres, will provide more space to display artefacts and better showcase their value.

The Hue Department of Finance said idle public properties had been reassigned for management and use following the two-tier local government reorganisation, while other sites were handed to relevant authorities for further handling.

The city plans to adjust its urban master plan to prioritise converting redundant properties into facilities for healthcare, education, culture, sports and other public services, with some sites to be studied for socio-economic development projects.
