Haiphong residents hand over rare wild animals

Three protected wild animals have been voluntarily handed over to authorities in Haiphong City for rescue and eventual release into the wild.

Two residents in Nam An Phu Commune surrendered a 5-kg Burmese python (Python molurus), a 6-kg Assamese macaque (Macaca asamensis) and a 3-kg rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), all classified as Group IIB protected wildlife under Vietnamese law.

The animals had been found wandering near residential areas in late June. After capturing them safely, the residents notified local authorities, who completed the handover to wildlife rescue agencies.

Haiphong's Forest Protection Department said residents had voluntarily surrendered 14 protected wild animals so far this year, including pythons, macaques and cobras.

The city has also intensified efforts to combat wildlife crime, identifying more than 300 individuals and organisations involved in activities such as hunting, breeding, transporting or trading wild animals, as well as several suspects using online platforms to sell protected species.

Since the beginning of the year, authorities have conducted 122 patrols and crackdowns, handling 20 wildlife protection violations and another 20 cases involving illegal fishing activities.
