Le Hoang Son, director of the Danang Special-use Forest Management Board, said on Monday the herd was recorded by camera traps installed in the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area.
In 2025, local residents in the Na Lau area of Que Phuoc Commune reported signs that elephants were breeding. The management board later installed 30 camera traps at 15 locations regularly used by the herd.
Recent images showed seven adult elephants and two calves, aged about five and two. Both calves are healthy and developing well, while the entire herd appeared in good condition and moved freely through the forest.
The board is using two camera-trap methods to monitor biodiversity, combining broader biodiversity surveys with targeted monitoring in areas frequented by wildlife.
Camera-trap surveys have also recorded a number of endangered and rare species of high conservation value.
They include large mammals and rare primates such as Asian elephants, giant muntjacs, Truong Son muntjacs, red-shanked douc langurs and grey-shanked douc langurs. Rare and endemic birds, including silver pheasants and crested argus, have also been recorded.
The board said camera-trap data provided scientific evidence on the distribution, movements, behaviour and habitat use of wildlife species, helping identify priority conservation areas and improve forest management.
“The presence of these species not only highlights the biodiversity value of Danang's special-use forests, but also reflects efforts to protect forests, preserve habitats and limit threats to natural resources,” a board representative said.
