Quang Tri People's Committee said on October 9 that they had sent an urgent document to the National Steering Committee on Natural Disasters Prevention and Search and Rescue to send a rescue helicopter to rescue the crew members on Vietship 01.

There are three boats sank as of October 9, while two boats have been left stranded another has drifted away. A total of 33 crew members are in need of help of which 12 are aboard Vietship 01 in the most dangerous situation. They are stranded near an embankment which is 400m away from Cua Viet Port.

This area often has high waves and strong currents so it's impossible for other rescue boats to approach the vessel. The proposal to use the helicopter has been submitted.

Colonel Le Van Phuong, head of the border guards in Quang Tri said the border guards at Cua Viet Port and Trieu Van had also worked with locality authorities and the local people to rescue five members of the Thanh Thanh Dat 55 which was swept onto the shore of Cua Viet beach. The members were transferred to hospital and have recovered.

Thanh Thanh Dat 55 had 11 crew members aboard when it was docked near Cua Viet Port on October 8 before being swept away. Thanh Thanh Dat 68 was able to rescue six members but the rest were swept away with the boat. The boat later sank and the crew members were swept ashore.

The heavy rain in Quang Tri has killed two people. Six other people are missing due to rains and flooding, while 12,000 houses were submerged underwater.

Quang Tri authorities have evacuated 3,645 households with 11,842 people to a higher ground.
