The station, operated by TH Fuel Trading Company in An Thoi Ward, capped purchases at VND 200,000 for cars and VND 50,000 for motorbikes.
During a surprise inspection on March 5, officials asked staff to fill a car’s tank but were refused, with employees saying the limits had been set by the business owner.
At the time of the inspection, the station still had around 7,000 litres of fuel in storage, including 4,000 litres of diesel and 3,000 litres of petrol.
The owner later acknowledged the restriction, saying the business had limited sales because supply from distributors had tightened and the station wanted to share fuel among more customers.
Local authorities said the measure violated regulations because the company reduced sales without notifying regulators.
Officials added that Phu Quoc currently has two main fuel suppliers and reserves are sufficient to meet demand for at least the coming week, with no shortages requiring retail limits.
Authorities said inspections would continue to prevent hoarding or practices that could cause concern among residents and tourists.
