Over 23,000 lightning strikes recorded in northern Vietnam

More than 23,000 lightning strikes were recorded across northern Vietnam between the night of April 24 and the early hours of April 25.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, widespread thunderstorms swept through the region overnight, bringing torrential rain and intense electrical activity.

Between 1.30 am and 5 am on April 25 alone, the system detected approximately 23,200 lightning strikes, comprising both cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud discharges. Of these, more than 10,400 were cloud-to-ground strikes.

Earlier, between 10.30 pm and 11.20 pm on April 24, an additional 7,500 lightning strikes were also recorded across the region.

The lightning activity was concentrated in several provinces and cities, including Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Haiphong, Hanoi, and the Gulf of Tonkin.

This event follows a similar occurrence on June 5 last year, when Hanoi and surrounding areas were struck by over 10,500 lightning bolts during a heavy downpour.

In a separate weather development, hailstorms battered parts of Ha Giang, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Hue, and Quang Ngai on April 23 and 24, causing damage to numerous homes and infrastructure.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert to ongoing severe weather risks as the transitional season brings increasingly unpredictable atmospheric conditions.
