The second Kim-Trump summit in Hanoi ended with no agreement reached because of divided opinions over the lifting of US sanctions on February 28.

However, the North Korea's official KCNA news agency said on Friday that Kim and Trump had "agreed to continue having productive talks to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and the improvement of US-North Korea relations".

"Chairman Kim and President Trump have expressed their confidence that North Korea-US relations can achieve groundbreaking improvements if they collaborate together with patience and wisdom, although there are many unavoidable obstacles ahead", KCNA said.

Just hours earlier North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho held an impromptu press conference late at night to explain the outcomes of the summit.

Ri said that North Korea had offered “realistic proposals” but the US wanted more, and the two sides couldn’t reconcile their differences leading to what the US President called a “walk away” earlier in his press conference in Hanoi.

He emphasised that the North Koreans did not seek a complete removal of all sanctions as US President Trump said in his press conference, but only partial relief.

Ri said that if the two sides could go through this “level of trust-building regime”, then “we would be able to accelerate the process of denuclearisation”.

However, he said the US side was insistent on North Korea moving “one more step” besides the shutting down of the Yongbyon plant, the country’s main nuclear facility.
