Recent spates of unexplained vehicle fires have caused public controversy

Problems in desperate need of solutions include increased unemployment, problems in land disputes, unexplained vehicle fires, and a mysterious disease in Quang Nam Province.

Huynh Dan, Chairman of the Central Committee for the Vietnam Fatherland Front, delivered a report on deputies’ proposals at the NA’s opening meeting on the morning of May 21.

Several outstanding issues

According to the report, the country is facing economic difficulties which have dramatically affected people’s lives, including low economic growth, decreased purchasing power, mounting inventories, bankruptcies, and increased unemployment.

Despite decreases in interest rates, a large number of enterprises are still struggling to access bank loans due to strict requirements and complicated procedures.

NA deputies said that the current situation had just benefited banks while harming the interests of both depositors and borrowers.

They proposed that the NA and government take measures to support businesses and people in overcoming this challenging period in a bid to maintain production and ensure employment.

Diseases, especially hand-foot-mouth disease, have plagued several localities nationwide. A skin disease in the central province of Quang Ngai has remained a mystery to medical experts, worrying local people, the report said.

The recent spate of unexplained vehicle fires has caused public controversy and posed dangers to people.

The deputies praised efforts made by the transportation industry and some local governments to curb traffic accidents and congestion over the past time. However, according to them, many methods currently employed remained inefficient.

A survey should be carried out widely among the people and relevant agencies before applying any new methods to ease traffic accidents and jams, they noted.

The report also indicated that the country has reported an increase in the number of complaints and denouncements since early 2012. They situation was attributed to inadequate land compensation and withdrawal policies.

In order to improve the situation, the NA and government were proposed to take more effective measures to end long disputes related to land compensation and relocations.

The deputies emphasised the urgent need to amend the current Land Law to make it more suitable to the current circumstances.

Early vote of confidence required

Under the viewpoint of NA deputies, corruption is still a pressing issue, with more sophisticated misconducts being discovered.

They stated that the number of corruption cases that were being detected was too modest, indicating a failure to get to grips with the phenomenon.

Investigations and resolutions of corruption cases were taking too long and the penalties were not strict enough to act as an effective deterrent.

Too many people were being given probation while too few corrupt individuals were having their assets appropriated.

In a bid to effectively deal with the problems, NA deputies urged for early votes of confidence in senior officials, along with a strengthening in the capacity of anti-corruption agencies.
