On August 14, traffic police deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) around the Khuat Duy Tien-Nguyen Trai intersection on Ring Road 3 as part of traffic monitoring and enforcement operations.
The drones are being used to detect vehicles illegally entering emergency lanes, stopping or parking in prohibited areas and buses picking up or dropping off passengers at unauthorised locations.
Traffic police said drones provide high-resolution aerial footage that can capture violations from start to finish, including vehicle number plates, locations and the circumstances of an offence. The footage can then be used as evidence for enforcement.
The technology is particularly useful during rush hours, when heavy traffic makes violations more difficult to detect from ground level.
Drones are also being used to monitor congestion. Their wider aerial view allows police to identify crashes, broken-down vehicles and bottlenecks along Nguyen Trai Street and the elevated section of Ring Road 3.
Officers can then be sent to affected locations while traffic warnings and diversions can be issued to motorists approaching congested areas.
The UAVs can transmit footage in real time and have zoom capabilities that allow detailed images to be captured from long distances.
They are also equipped with artificial intelligence to help identify potential traffic violations, urban-order violations and congestion automatically.
