Quy Nhon Ward is currently dismantling and disposing of fishing boats that have completed deregistration procedures.
Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, vice chairwoman of the ward People's Committee, said 22 boats were being scrapped in the latest phase, with their owners receiving more than VND 6.5 billion in total support.
Local authorities have completed cost assessments and auction procedures for the dismantling and disposal process. An auction covering the scrapping of 138 fishing boats was completed at a cost of more than VND 460 million.
So far, 182 fishing boats in Quy Nhon Ward have registered for the programme, with 32 proposed for nearly VND 4 billion in support in the second phase.
Nguyet said the policy would help owners of ineligible or unwanted boats switch livelihoods while restructuring the fleet and promoting more sustainable fisheries.
Nearly 1,000 fishing boats across Gia Lai have registered for deregistration, with the province provisionally allocating more than VND 212 billion for the programme's first phase, according to the provincial Fisheries Sub-department.
Nguyen Huu Nghia, head of the Gia Lai Fisheries Sub-department, said dismantling the vessels was one of the first steps in restructuring the fishing fleet towards more sustainable fisheries.
He said the programme was intended to improve the quality of the fishing fleet and contribute to efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and address the European Commission's IUU yellow card.
