Good conditions and higher prices for fish make for a happier holiday in central Nghe An province.
This year, fishermen in Dien Chau District have been catching more fish thanks to favourable weather conditions. Some fishing boats are catching two to three times the amount of past years.
Mr Dang Van Hai, 48-year old ship owner, said, “I net nearly 300kg of different kinds of fish each night. Some of them, like white butter fish and cuttlefish, were nowhere to be found last year. Now, with these better catches, a fisherman can earn at least VND300,000 (USD15) per day.”
According to a review report of the People’s Committee of Dien Ngoc Commune, Dien Chau District, the commune’s total fish output reached 12,250 tonnes in 2010, surpassing the year’s target by 40%. Per capita income of the locality was estimated at VND17 million (USD850) in 2010.
Tran Dinh Quang, head of Yen Thinh Hamlet’s fishermen’s association, said, in 2010, fishermen in his hamlet net a combined total of 1,200 tonnes of fish. This was up between 8% and 10% from the year before. This is an important windfall for the economy of the area, whose population is three fourths fishermen.
“Despite a large amount of fish caught, we don’t have enough to sell,” said Lang Van Phuong who has been a fisherman for 15 years.
