Six new diphtheria cases in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak have been confirmed, raising the locality’s total number of patients to 16.
According to Doctor Bui Nam On, director of Cu M’gar District’s Board of Health, the four local cases are the relatives of a four-year-old boy in Trap Village who was tested positive for diphtheria on July 13.
Cu M’gar District has witnessed six diphtheria cases.
Meanwhile, on the morning of the same day, one case was detected at Cu Pui Commune in Krong Bong and the two others were reported at Day Bhang Commune of Cu Kuin District.
Until now, Dak Lak Province has recorded 16 diphtheria patients.
Nay Phi La, director of the provincial Department of Health, said that the agency has co-operated with local authorities to zone and quarantine the disease outbreaks. People in the affected areas have been provided diphtheria tests and vaccination.
The Ministry of Health has set a target to ensure diphtheria vaccination for up to 90% of people aged from two in the four Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Dak Nong. The programme is expected to cost VND89 billion (USD3.86 million).
By the end of Thursday, the Central Highlands region of Vietnam has seen 93 diphtheria patients in total, including three fatalities.
