Remains of 12 war martyrs recovered in Central Highlands cave

Authorities in Gia Lai, Vietnam have recovered the remains of 12 war martyrs along with wartime artefacts from a cave in Ia Ly Commune.

The discovery was made after local residents, while hunting bats in the Chu Pa Mountain area, found items believed to belong to soldiers and alerted authorities.

A recovery team from Army Corps 34 conducted a search between April 6 and 8, retrieving 12 sets of remains.

Artefacts found alongside the remains included hammocks, parachute fabric, metal pens, AK ammunition magazines, buttons, rubber sandal soles, communication wires, toothbrushes and medicine bottles, offering insight into harsh wartime conditions.

The remains have been transferred to a local hall in Ia Ly Commune for preservation and military tribute rites.

According to the recovery team, historical records show the area was an operational zone for several units, including Regiments 609, 66, 24 and 320, as well as logistics and staff units under the Central Highlands Front, B3, between 1966 and 1969.

From 2020 to 2025, a total of 46 sets of martyrs’ remains have been recovered in the Chu Pa area.
