Foreign crew member evacuated for emergency care off Vietnam

A Filipino crew member suffering severe abdominal pain has been medically evacuated from a vessel off southern Vietnam for urgent treatment.

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre said its SAR 272 vessel brought the patient ashore at Phuoc Thang Ward, HCM City, at around 10 am on April 9, where he was handed over for transfer to hospital.

The patient, identified as Abude Anthony Palo, 46, showed symptoms of acute pain in the lower right abdomen, along with vomiting and sweating. Medical assessments indicated suspected acute appendicitis, with a risk of serious complications if left untreated.

The centre received an emergency request at 8.40 pm on April 8 from the vessel ESL Dachan Bay, which was travelling from Taiwan to Singapore. The ship altered course towards waters off HCM City to facilitate the evacuation.

Rescue authorities provided remote medical guidance while coordinating the operation. SAR 272 departed at 6 am on April 9 with a medical team from Vung Tau hospital and reached the vessel about two hours later.

The patient was transferred to the rescue vessel, given initial treatment and brought ashore for further medical care.
