Police at the house of Hung's ex-wife
The murder occurred at the house in Village 10B, Hai Xuan Commune. Nguyen Van Hung, born in 1973, shot his estranged wife at her home at 7 pm on December 29 following an argument.
He afterwards ran to his ex-wife's house in Hai Hoa Ward, Mong Cai City. However, Hung's ex-wife was not at home. Two children, his ex-wife's sister and a friend were there and Hung held all four as hostages.
Police in Mong Cai City quickly arrived at the scene and worked with local authorities to rescue the hostages while persuading Hung to surrender.
At 11 pm, Hung killed himself with the same gun. The hostages were all safe.
