Grey sedge has become a main crop in My Hanh Bac Commune in Duc Hoa District over the past 30 years.

Grey sedge has a hard stem with brown flowers on top and is about 1.3-1.8 metres high. The plant grows wild in Vietnam’s wetlands and is used for handicraft products such as baskets, bags and cushions.

Grey sedge prices have risen over recent years, bringing a profit of hundreds of millions of VND for households.

This grass is easy to grow and does not require much care. After five months, people start harvesting. Farmers often keep the roots and continue caring for them for about three months before they can sell to traders again. However, after seven years, farmers will replace new grey sedge plants.

Each bunch of grey sedge is sold for VND15,000-20,000.

Grey sedge growers in My Hanh Bac Commune can earn annual profits of VND100 million (USD3,929) per hectare.
