Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in April is estimated to have risen by 3.16% against March, the highest increase since May 2008.

The city’s Statistics Office reported that in April the city’s CPI increased by 8.2% against December 2010, and 13.99% against one year ago. Hikes in transport and food service followed the trend of petrol and electricity.
Among goods and services, the transport sector saw the highest increase, with 5.77%, followed by food services with a 4.56% rise. The runners-up are housing and construction materials, which rose by 4.12%; household furniture by 1.49%, recreation and leisure services increased 1.39% and apparel increased 1.24%.
According to Vneconomy, Hanoi’s April CPI rose by 3.28% in one month, the highest increase since February 2008.
Against the same period last year, the capital’s April CPI grew by 17.51%.
Food services, transportation and housing, water, as well as electricity and fuel saw the highest increase in CPI in April, with 5.06%, 5.82% and 4.28% respectively from the month before.
As for the nationwide CPI, Le Xuan Nghia, Vice Chairman of the Government\'s National Financial Supervisory Committee, said that it will be higher than last month, adding that April will witness the highest increase of any month so far this year.
According to the latest forecasts, the country’s April CPI will increase by 3.2% from last month.
