The municipal Department of Transport wanted 635 million bus passengers last year, but in reality, the figure was just 570 million.

HCM City sees fall in public bus passengers
Experts attributed the decrease to out-dated buses. Meanwhile, many bus routes have been suspended due to losses. Increasing input costs have affected operations.
More people have tended to choose app-based transportation services such as Grab and Go Viet, which were blamed for the drop in public bus passengers.
According to the HCM City’s Transport Department, this year, the agency will focus on new bus system which is environmentally-friendly.
HCM City has 144 public bus routes, 30 others to transport workers and employees to their workplaces, and 123 schools with bus services for students.
HCM City put into use a new modern bus terminal in District 1. The 5,600 square-metre Ben Thanh bus terminal in Ham Nghi District has total investment capital of VND8.5 billion (USD387,363). The terminal has 12 electronic screens connecting the centre via the internet and four modern bathrooms.
