HCM City welcomed 2.1 million international tourists in the first seven months of 2013, reaching 57% of this year target.

HCM City's goal is to receive 4.1 million international tourists

This is a 13% increase in the number of tourist from the previous year, and reflects a rebound of the city's tourism industry.

The higher numbers brought VND47 trillion (USD2.3 million) in revenue to the city, and the goal is to welcome 4.1 international tourists who, it is hoped would bring VND82 trillion in revenue over the year.

According to the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the city received over 246,000 tourists in July and earned over VND6 trillion, representing an increase of 15% from last year.

The city began focusing on sustainable forms of tourism development after it was recognised as an important economic sector.

The tourism industry is now seen as essential in the HCM City's plans for economic restructuring, improving high-tech services and industries while limiting those which cause pollution.

HCM City has also successfully implemented the VAT refund programme for tourists flying through Tan Son Nhat Airport. The goods exempt must be new and not on the list of prohibited items. A valid invoice with a value of at least VND2 million (USD95) and a tax claim statement are required.

Commercial banks selected to handle the tax repayments are allowed to charge a service fee of up to 15% of the refund value. The refund will be made in VND and can be converted to other currencies accordingly. Currently, 37 enterprises in HCM City have joined the programme.
