Nguyen Van Hoa receives the donation
"My son is still too small and doesn't understand anything yet so I don't talk to him about my illness. I only told him to be strong and happy even if I had to work far away. He keeps asking me where I will go to and why I don't take him with me," Hoa said.
Hoa takes care of his son at the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
Hoa said he thought of giving up as he could not borrow money from anyone.
After their story was published, many people have called and given gifts to them. Representatives of Dan Tri and the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion transferred a VND186,180,000 donated by readers to Hoa's family.
"My health deteriorated greatly after the radiotherapy sessions but my son's health is much more important. I feel relieved thanks to everyone's support," he said.
He then donated VND5m (USD220) to a family in Ha Nam Province with three mentally-ill members. Hoa also said he would spend parts of the donation to help other patients with disadvantaged backgrounds at the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
"Thanks to everyone that our patients are more motivated and have funds to continue their treatment," said Ly Thi Hao, vice head of the hospital's social work.
