A reporter from Dantri/Dtinews Online Newspaper and authorities in Trieu Son District visited Tran Thi Tan in Dan Ly Commune and transferred VND 265.54 million in donations from readers on February 16.
The donations came after a story of the 90-year-old woman was recently published by the newspaper.
The elderly woman currently cares for two ailing adult children, her 63-year-old daughter with arthritis and epilepsy and her 60-year-old son suffering from mental problems. The family live in a 15-square metre room in Dan Ly Commune.
"My son behaves like a three-year-old," she said. "He often just sits in the yard and laughs. I often have to search for him as he wanders off at all hours of the day."
Tan said that her life is full of sorrow. Her husband died early, leaving her and two ailing children behind.
Every day, Tan collects scrap metal to earn VND5-20,000 to buy food.
Their house has seriously deteriorated. Local authorities helped to consolidate the house with canvas. However, her son ruined it after that.
Receiving the donations, the woman expressed her sincere thanks to all kind donors for their valuable support provided to her family. She said that many people had also visited her, bringing food, warm clothes and blankets for them.
"People also gave me over VND60 million when visiting my house during the Lunar New Year holiday," she said.
Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Dan Ly Commune People’s Committee, said Tan’s family was among the poorest in the locality. They are raising more money to build a proper house for the family.
