Hanoi\'s consumer price index (CPI) in October surged dramatically by 1.22 per cent over last month\'s figures, which was the highest increase in the last eight months, reported the Hanoi General Statistics Office yesterday.
The capital city\'s CPI rose 9.86 per cent in comparison with the first 10 months of last year.
Of the 11 commodity groups, only the post and telecommunications sector remained unchanged this month.
The food and drink sector experienced a 2.5 per cent increase in October.
The housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials sector\'s CPI rose by 1.35 per cent over last month\'s figures.
According to market insiders, the high increase in CPI this month resulted from the increase in tourists that were in the capital during the millennium celebrations, which drove up prices at restaurants.
Domestic gold prices fluctuated daily as the price increased on the global market, lifting the gold price index by 8.14 per cent over last month and 38.88 per cent over the same period last year.
However, the US dollar exchange rate index rose just 0.85 per cent over September and 7.49 per cent over the first 10 months of last year.
