Compal Electronics Inc.'s (2324.TW) Vietnam plant will start production in the second half of this year, a company official who declined to be named said Wednesday.
"We are in the final stages of moving in machinery and conducting employee training for the Vietnam plant," he said, adding the plant will make notebook PCs.
The plant was originally scheduled to make 500,000-600,000 laptops a month, but the company has since lowered its target due to problems associated with workers' strikes, he told Dow Jones Newswires, without elaborating.
The official also said Compal, the world's largest contract notebook maker by shipments, will complete construction of its fifth China plant, in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, by the end of this year. All of Compal's China operations are in Kunshan.
The plant will be able to make 1 million notebooks a month, bringing Compal's total monthly production capacity in China to 6 million notebooks.
